Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are an important part of our organization. Do you have a few hours to give? Consider one of our many volunteer opportunities.

Become a Tutor

Our dedicated tutors have been teaching since July 2006 and the overwhelming majority feel the tutor/student experience has been worthwhile and rewarding. The reasons for wanting to be a tutor are as varied as the number of tutors in our literacy council. Tutors should meet the following expectations:

  • Complete 14 hours of training

  • Agree to tutor for a 12 month time period

  • Use suggested materials

  • Meet with a student at least once a week for 1-2 hours

  • Meet with students in a public location

  • Keep records of student’s progress

  • Provide reports on student’s progress

  • Attend in-service/network meetings (optional)

Support Our Tutors

Not everyone can tutor, but our tutors need support. Tutor support is a great way to volunteer when you can't commit the time to tutor a student. We need:

  • Help organize and maintain materials

  • Tutors trainers

  • Translator (Spanish to English)

  • Helpers to evaluate new students
